Beyond The Gates Uses Met Gala As Inspiration to Honor Jeresa Featherstone’s Work
he Met Gala is a nighttime event. Beyond The Gates made it work for daytime. Using fashion’s biggest night as inspiration, the soap celebrated costume designer Jeresa Featherstone.
Superfine: Black Tailoring Style
This year’s Met Gala theme was “Superfine: Black Tailoring Style,” which celebrated Black dandyism and style. The official Instagram account for BTG celebrated Featherstone’s work from the show. The first photo featured Anita (Tamra Tunie) in a bright red jacket with Vernon (Clifton Davis) in an elegant black velvet blazer.
The picture from Featherstone reads, “Let’s take a look at some of our favorite suiting moments from what has aired so far!” In the next slide, Smitty (Mike Manning) rocked a pop of color while his husband, Martin (Brandon Claybon), stuck to an all-black suit.
There were also shots from the wedding of the year. Ted (Maurice Johnson) and his wife Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) showed them coordinating shiny looks. There was a second photo of Anita Nicole talking in the first episode. Featherstone wrote, “I am intentional and featuring renowned black fashion designers and brands across the diaspora.”
The rest of the post features more iconic looks of Anita, Vanessa (Laura Buglioli), Hayley (Marquita Goings), Andre (Sean Freeman), and Vernon. The last quote reads, “As well as a few custom suits and gowns designed by me! We aren’t even halfway through season one, so stay tuned for more superfine looks to come!” This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Making History
BTG made history in two ways. It’s the first soap to debut in 30 years and the first daytime show to feature an all-Black ensemble. The show isn’t the only one that’s made history. The Met Gala made history as well. The theme alone created a conversation about Black style, cultural influence, and menswear for the first time ever.
Some of these cultural influences have been referenced on the show. The Duprees and the Richardsons pull out all the stops when it comes to style. We can’t wait to see what Featherstone has in mind next. What are your favorite looks from BTG? Let us know in the comments section.
