Smoggie Queens Returns for a Joyous and Hilarious Second Season

The hit BBC comedy Smoggie Queens has been officially renewed for a second season and is set to return later this year on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer. The show, known for its quirky humor, heartfelt moments, and celebration of LGBTQ+ joy, has captured the hearts of viewers, both queer and straight, with its unique blend of slapstick comedy and authentic storytelling.

A Show Full of Heart and Laughter

Smoggie Queens follows a lively and tight-knit group of LGBTQ+ individuals in Middlesbrough, navigating their way through life, love, and, of course, wigs. The BBC has promised that the second series will bring even more laughter, sharper one-liners, and an abundance of joy for fans.

Phil Dunning, the show’s writer, creator, and star, plays Dickie—the ultimate drag diva, hilarious narcissist, and self-proclaimed leading lady. He is joined by a vibrant cast, including Waterloo Road’s Mark Benton as Mam, the loving and wise ‘mother’ of the group, Coronation Street’s Alexandra Mardell as Lucinda, and Patsy Lowe as Sal, a woman of few words but plenty of attitude. Additionally, Elijah Young plays Stewart, a newcomer to the drag scene who quickly becomes Dickie’s personal punching bag.

Guest Stars and Exciting Cameos

Season one of Smoggie Queens delighted audiences with a surprise cameo from RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage, who played Elaine. With this precedent set, fans are eagerly speculating about which LGBTQ+ icons might make appearances in the upcoming season.

In a statement, Dunning expressed his excitement about the renewal, saying, “I’m really made up that the BBC have recommissioned Smoggie Queens.” He has previously described the show as “an out-and-out slapstick sitcom with a big old gay heart.”

What Makes a ‘Smoggie Queen’?

For those unfamiliar with the term, Dunning has explained that a Smoggie Queen is “somebody who is a bit of a weirdo. Someone who doesn’t conform to the status quo. An outsider and ideally somebody who’s from Teesside—but that’s not a prerequisite. We’re very inclusive.”

The first season of Smoggie Queens aimed to bring audiences feelings of pure joy and elation, and the show’s return signals that it has resonated deeply with viewers across the spectrum. With the new season on the horizon, fans can expect more hilarious misadventures, heartwarming friendships, and bold storytelling that refuses to shy away from celebrating the vibrant LGBTQ+ community.

Anticipation for the Upcoming Season

The renewal of Smoggie Queens is a testament to its success and growing fanbase. With its unapologetically queer humor, dynamic characters, and fresh approach to sitcom storytelling, the show has become a standout in British comedy.

As excitement builds for season two, one thing is certain: Smoggie Queens is here to serve up more laughter, love, and fabulous chaos. Stay tuned for an official release date, and get ready for another season of unforgettable moments and queer joy at its finest.
